Travel to Bucharest, Romania?
Depending on your intentions and budget, you can reach Bucharest by plane, by car or by train. Each of the options has its advantages, so it’s your call. If you travel from Europe, your journey may take from under three hours to more than two days.
Bucharest travel by plane. You can find cheap flights to Bucharest, Romania, especially if you book in advance. Low-cost travel is also available, with companies such as Wizz Air, Blue Air, Air Berlin. The Romanian main flight operator TAROM is also a good option for your Bucharest travel, from most destinations. Check skyscanner.net for some options.
Bucharest travel by car. If your origin country is in the Western Europe you’ll find easier to travel to Bucharest Romania following the route Germany-Austria-Hungary-Romania. Get a Europe travel map and a Romania one. Unfortunately there is no significant highway in Romania, but your travel to Bucharest will be rewarded with beautiful landscapes through the mountains and small villages.
Bucharest travel by train. Romania has a good railway connection, but your journey to Bucharest will take a while. Enjoy the landscapes, take photos, chat to Romanians. You may also consider a combination between night train and day train as it may be tiring sitting so many hours… From Budapest to Bucharest the travel may take around twelve hours.
Already in Bucharest Romania?
As a tourist in Bucharest, you may need some travel tips and information. Don’t get too overwhelmed by the precautions the classic guides assume. Romania is in the European Union and Bucharest is safer than they say. However, pay attention to your pocket, as tricking and cheating is quite usual. Tourists travelling to Bucharest are especially a good target. Choose the safe way (with bills) and everything will be all right.
Romanian currency. The leu (lei) is the currency of Romania. It is subdivided into 100 bani. The name of the currency means "lion". 1 EUR is equivalent with approx. 4.4 RON (lei), depending on the current exchange rate. Foreign currencies may be exchanged at banks or authorized exchange offices (called: "casa de schimb valutar"). Don’t use the airport ones, the rate is usually higher. Go to any bank, there are a lot of banks in Bucharest, almost on every street. If you choose an exchange office, check for their “comision 0” (no additional fees for the transaction). You can find ATMs at the banks usually, but also in the commercial centres.
Bucharest Taxi. Keep in mind that average price is 1.4 RON/km (around 30 euro cents). In any case don't use a cab with more than 3 RON/km, unless you find a flying one! You can find below some of the most reliable Bucharest taxi companies, but there are also others, just look carefully to the price on their car door! MERIDIAN - +4(0)21 9444, LEONE - +4(0)21 9425, MONDIAL - +4(0)21 9423, SPEED - +4(0)21 9477, COBALCESCU - +4(0)21 9451, TAXI 2000 - +4(0)21 9494, TAXI AS - +4(0)21 9435
Tips. Most of Bucharest venues and services don’t have the tip included in the bill. Consider a 10%-20% tip depending on the services.
